Does Pilates Help with Running?
Pilates for Runners
Run faster and farther, with a lower risk of injury.
Whether you are a professional runner or a weekend runner trying to shed a few pounds, there is no doubt that it is very easy to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. However, your body may start to lose the battle—especially if asymmetry develops.
Body asymmetry develops due to poor mechanics when we do not utilize all aspects correctly. Hip joint pain may turn out to be caused by the knee joint.
In addition to injuries, it can also lead to many shed tears, tension, and strains.
Why Pilates?
Pilates exercises create a stronger, more flexible back and core (center), and also help in faster recovery from tension and injuries.
For a runner, posture is a key component of success. And posture depends on a strong core. Pilates develops a strong center, supporting and strengthening the muscles of the torso, arms, and pelvis. Ultimately, this positively affects posture, technique, balance, and stability. It allows for a focus on keeping the head and neck parallel to the spine and pelvis, as well as the legs and toes. All of this contributes to more efficient movement and a lower risk of injury.
Pilates Exercises:
- will evenly develop back muscles,
- will lengthen and align the back for better stability,
- will develop the diaphragm,
- will increase overall flexibility, strength, and balance,
- will increase the range of motion in the hips and shoulders,
- will enhance concentration through breath,
- will help the body recover faster from injuries.
Benefits of a Stronger and More Stable Core:
- more efficient uphill running, with stabilized musculature,
- more efficient downhill running with a stronger and more balanced pelvic area,
- reduced tension in the neck, head, and shoulders,
- increased oxygenation and endurance, thanks to a fully stretched diaphragm,
- focus on proper movement with better kinesthetic awareness,
- reduced fatigue due to less strain on the body,
- shorter runner times, thanks to more efficient movement.
