What is better: mat or reformer?

It is hard to decide on a way to practice Pilates – especially at the beginning. What should you choose? Reformer or mat? Mat or reformer? What classes should you look for? Should you exercise alone at home or perhaps rely on a professional studio? Contrary to appearances, these questions and their answers are crucial to loving Pilates and avoiding injury.

What is the difference between a mat and a reformer?

A mat is what it is – how you exercise on it depends only on you. The Reformer, however, requires a moment of thought. How can a piece of equipment that looks like a torture device contribute to your health and physical fitness? It all comes down to a special construction based on pulleys, designed to keep your limbs on the right track, helping you understand and master the movements. Additionally, there are sturdy springs with variable resistance that act like “extra muscles,” making it easier for you to perform exercises. It is the reformer – thanks to the adjustable resistance – that offers great flexibility and the ability to adapt to each user, regardless of their level of advancement. The reformer also provides additional support and makes it easier for individuals with poor fitness and those using the reformer as part of rehabilitation. On the other hand, advanced users can take advantage of additional resistance to improve their capabilities.

What will be easier to start with?

If you are just starting your journey with Pilates, it will be much easier for you to master these highly precise exercises using the reformer during your workouts. This device motivates the muscles to work much more efficiently and reduces the risk of performing exercises incorrectly. It is important to consider that exercises on the mat are more challenging because they provide no support. The mat allows for less advanced exercises – which at the basic level does not matter much – but their precision depends solely on you. Therefore, it is better not to start Pilates training alone at home using online videos – no one will correct your technique or motivate you to perform the movements correctly. And in Pilates, precision counts above all.

Less boredom and more possibilities

The reformer – unlike the mat – offers much greater possibilities. Thanks to the straps, springs, and movable platform – with them, you can perform all the exercises you would also do on the mat, but additionally, you will be able to expand them with new modifications and exercises dedicated to working on the reformer. The mat limits exercises to the capabilities of your body – there are definitely fewer of them, and they can quickly become boring. If you started with the mat and are looking for new challenges – opt for the reformer.

The difference in results

In Pilates, awareness of your own body is very important. Starting Pilates sessions on the mat will make it much harder for you to perform the exercises correctly. It will take much more time and energy, as well as perseverance. Of course, it all depends on how aware you are of your own body when starting your Pilates journey. The less awareness you have, the longer you will have to work for the desired results. It is somewhat different with the reformer – its versatile design allows for gradually increasing the level of exercises, which goes hand in hand with the growth of your skills. As a result, you will achieve a better figure and improve your posture in a significantly shorter time.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Mat and Reformer Exercises

Who Should Use a Mat and Who Should Use a Reformer?

A mat is the best choice if:

  • You are just starting your Pilates journey and have access to a professional instructor.
  • You have a limited budget.
  • You want to exercise anywhere and anytime.
  • You are focusing on strengthening your core and improving flexibility.

A reformer is suitable if:

  • You want a more advanced workout tailored to your needs.
  • You have experience in Pilates and are looking for new challenges.
  • You are interested in professional rehabilitation or intensive body work.
  • You can invest in equipment or attend more expensive classes in a studio.

So, Is It a Mat or a Reformer?

It depends solely on you. If you feel capable of starting with mat exercises – then go ahead. The most important thing is to choose a good Pilates studio – at least at the beginning of your learning. This will help you gain the right knowledge, and the teacher will correct every movement you make. If you want to start with a reformer – also choose a good instructor. Exercises on the reformer require more humility and, in a way, you will be forced to act more precisely – right from the start. The reformer is higher, making it much easier for the trainer to correct your mistakes – they will simply be able to notice more. In summary – the most important thing in Pilates is to start. Mat training will allow you to learn to control your muscles, and the reformer – in addition to that – will increase your strength. Perhaps the best idea is to combine both pieces of equipment, which will help you develop agility, flexibility, and healthy strength.
