Group Pilates vs. Individual Pilates

Do you want to start your journey with Pilates and are wondering which form to choose? Are group classes better or rather individual ones? Are there any differences in conducting these classes? It turns out there are – and quite significant ones.

Group Pilates

Pilates can become a long-term adventure for you, not just a one-time experience. More and more clubs offer group classes. This is a good solution for those who want to see “what it’s all about” and often fear or feel embarrassed to attend individual classes. It is indeed easier to motivate yourself to work when attending classes with someone familiar. An additional plus is that such sessions are usually much cheaper and won’t strain your budget. However, on the other hand, this form of Pilates for beginners will be quite a challenge – the teacher will not have the opportunity to catch all the mistakes, it will be harder to master the exercises, and this increases the risk of injuries and strains. Group classes work perfectly for advanced individuals – they do not require as much attention from the teacher and know how to exercise well – so the risk of injuring oneself in this case is rather minimal.

Individual Pilates

Here, the situation looks a bit different. The teacher focuses 100% of their attention on you, making it easier for you to perform the exercises and allowing you to start doing them correctly more quickly. In Pilates, precise movement is very important – and full control over it – especially at the beginning – is guaranteed by the watchful eye of the teacher. Such classes may be more expensive, but they are the only ones that guarantee complete customization of the sessions to your abilities and allow you to “learn” Pilates with a lower risk of performing the exercises incorrectly. Bad habits – even in exercises – are very difficult to eliminate from your mind and muscles later on. Your body has an incredible ability to remember movement – and if performed incorrectly, it will either yield no results or lead to injuries. Another advantage of individual classes is the ability to set your own schedule with your teacher. You are not dependent on a fixed time – together you decide when it is best for you to meet. The classes themselves can also turn out to be less stressful – you do not have to wait for the rest of the group to master what you have already succeeded in, and vice versa – zero worries about not keeping up. Individual classes provide you with your own pace – allowing you to achieve the planned results faster.

What to choose?

It depends on your level of advancement and your goal. If you are just starting out and know that you will become friends with Pilates for a longer time – it is better to choose individual classes. If you are not entirely convinced but just want to try without putting too much strain on your budget – choose group classes. Advanced individuals will likely choose what resonates more with them – some prefer individual work for greater freedom and contact with the teacher, while others find more pleasure in group classes. Ultimately, the choice is always yours.
