Is Pilates Difficult?
Are you wondering if Pilates is for you? This increasingly popular exercise method has already been loved by many people in Poland and around the world. What makes it so popular? How does it help in building health and good condition? Is practicing Pilates difficult? Read on and find out if Pilates is for you!
PILATES METHOD – WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE?
Pilates is a system of exercises created by German athlete Joseph Pilates. It is based on a holistic understanding of how the human body works. In creating his method, Joseph Pilates relied on detailed knowledge of the functioning of the musculoskeletal system and other systems, which allowed him to develop a precise yet very intuitive way of moving, enabling muscle work in isolation and perfect alignment. This helps to avoid tension and strains, and thus – injuries and traumas.
Pilates exercises have a comprehensive developmental effect and bring many benefits. They strengthen and stretch muscles, elongate the body, develop deep muscles, improve balance, and increase core strength. And all this while maintaining movement within safe ranges.
Pilates masterfully combines elements of several disciplines – yoga, ballet, and gymnastics. This skillful combination has led to the creation of a discipline that provides people with well-being and improves their health. Thanks to Pilates, the body becomes more athletic and slender. An additional advantage is that practicing Pilates is relaxing – performing balanced exercises accompanied by calm music allows one to relieve stress and better cope with emotions.
WHO CAN PRACTICE PILATES?
When Joseph Pilates began developing his method, he was not a picture of health – he struggled with many ailments, including asthma, allergies, rheumatic fever, and rickets. It was these diseases that pushed him to seek a method that would help him achieve better fitness. The result was excellent – at the age of 14, young Pilates began earning money by posing as a model for anatomical drawings – he had sculpted his body so beautifully and harmoniously.
This story shows that Pilates is a method suitable for practically everyone – even those who are ill, elderly, or recovering from injuries. It can also be practiced by pregnant women. If you are looking for a method that you can start regardless of age and physical condition, Pilates will work perfectly. The wealth of Pilates exercises allows for the creation of an appropriate training plan for everyone.
This does not mean that Pilates is in any way an easy form of exercise. As you progress, its level of difficulty increases, but it is never too strenuous for the body. It works wonderfully for athletes and dancers who wish to strengthen the deep muscles of their bodies to achieve smoother, more graceful movement. Therefore, Pilates can be an excellent form of exercise for beginners and a perfect complementary training for those practicing other disciplines.
IS PILATES DIFFICULT?
Pilates is a workout that shapes the entire body, rather than just individual parts. It is characterized by a vast variety – there are hundreds of exercise options within this method. However, this does not make it a difficult and inaccessible discipline.
Pilates training will not lead you to extreme fatigue – you won’t feel your shirt soaked with sweat. However, this does not mean that you will never experience muscle soreness. Interestingly, despite being somewhat less dynamic than other types of training, Pilates often delivers results quickly – often faster than more exhausting disciplines. This is precisely its uniqueness – although you leave the exercise room not exhausted and still have energy for more exercises, you quickly notice that your whole body functions more efficiently.
A certain difficulty with Pilates may be the fact that it is a rather calm practice. For this reason, individuals who have previously trained intensely may find it too low in dynamics. However, it is worth trying and not skipping even those exercises that seem boring or too simple. In Pilates, each session is designed to support both large, strong muscles and those small, often weakened ones. This is where the holistic effect of the training lies, allowing you to feel and see changes throughout your entire body.
IS PILATES SAFE?
Many people wonder whether any exercise method will be safe for them before starting it. Pilates is, in most cases, an excellent choice in this regard. It is considered one of the safest training methods among all those offered by fitness schools worldwide.
Pilates is suitable not only for healthy individuals – it works well for people with musculoskeletal disorders, such as discopathies or spondylolisthesis, with postural defects, after surgeries, injuries, and traumas. It can serve as a form of rehabilitation.
Pilates not only does not expose you to injuries but actually teaches the body how to avoid them. This happens because it focuses on what is deep within the body, as well as on controlling its proper alignment. In Pilates, you do not work with large ranges, heavy loads, or in strange positions, which makes it exceptionally safe. Of course, there are advanced, even acrobatic Pilates positions, but they are not the goal of the method itself – the primary focus is on improving the body, health, and well-being.
