Reformer – applications and differences

Joseph Pilates, while creating the concept of Contrology, also developed a series of machines designed to assist in working with the body. Most machines were based on the use of springs. Their origins are considered to be simple machines made from hospital beds, intended for the rehabilitation of injured soldiers. They quickly became an inspiration for the creation of the final versions, such as the Cadillac and the reformer, which has become an iconic instrument for every developing Pilates studio. In the following text, you will learn: what exactly is a reformer? What are the differences between specific models and how to choose and use it?

Reformer vs. mat – what is it really about?

The reformer is a machine consisting of a long frame, mounted tracks, a movable carriage, and straps or ropes with handles. It was created to assist in learning specific exercises from the field of Contrology. The reformer helps to understand how the body functions and how to fully utilize it (which also applies to the mat). Precise exercises on the mat are challenging, but when you transfer them to the reformer, you will see them in a new dimension. Try doing a hundred on the mat and on the reformer. The reformer is the best teacher. During the exercises, it will become clear whether your muscles are working evenly. The reformer and mat complement each other in training. The springs in the reformer act like muscles; they can either ease your work or provide an additional challenge. Exercises on the mat rely on gravity and the weight of your body. The number of exercise combinations on the reformer compared to the mat is incomparable, which makes the reformer an excellent tool in rehabilitation as well. Exercises on the mat and on the reformer are part of the entire system and should occur together.

What is better to start with?

On one hand, the mat is fundamental. On the other hand, it is the reformer that will teach you the correct perception of movements and your body. If you start with the mat, and after some time begin training on the reformer and return to the floor, you will see that the mat is no longer the same. Thanks to the machines, you will significantly increase the range of exercises you know. Working in Contrology (Pilates) is based on intelligent and precise movement – the reformer is the best machine for such work. The level of advancement of a person does not matter here – the settings of the machine allow for work with practically any client. Joseph Pilates used machines as a foundation to prepare everyone for independent exercises. This principle should also apply today. Over the years, the reformer has become the foundation of every reputable Pilates studio. All thanks to its versatility. Joseph Pilates’ system is indeed based on several machines, and the entire group should be used in Contrology, but if someone wants to start with one machine, the universal reformer is certainly a good choice.

Which Reformer to Choose?

Choosing a reformer is a difficult decision that has kept many people awake at night. We consider not only functionality but also appearance. The latter aspect evokes a lot of emotions and is often a deciding factor. It all depends on what matters to us and what kind of work we do. All the machines presented below are intended for professional use (also at home). They operate on the same principle, and modifications provide certain conveniences. We also have a reformer that was created according to the guidelines for the first machines. One of Joseph Pilates’ own students co-created this machine.

Contrology Reformer

This is the most faithfully recreated classic reformer, modeled after the reformer made in 1980 for Jay Grimes. With the development of technology, efforts were made to combine traditional craftsmanship with innovations that together create equipment that is more demanding for users while ensuring smooth and pleasant operation. All of this is based on the ideas and intentions of Joseph Pilates himself. A number of solutions applied in it allowed a return to the way of exercising as on the original machines made by Joseph. The CR has a strong and durable aluminum frame with a fixed height, traditional leather straps with adjustable length, which require significantly more effort during exercises. In addition, the movable platform with contoured armrests, lower than those on modern reformers, provides an ideal fit for the shape of the arms and feet. The springs are identical to those used in the first reformers. They have one resistance and a long hook, which directly affects the specificity of the exercises and requires more strength to move the platform. Just like the height of the frame, the angle of the handrail is fixed. The CR is not the quietest reformer – this is due to the fact that it is modeled on technology from years ago, with all its advantages and disadvantages. The CR presents much greater challenges to the exerciser, allowing for satisfactory results in a much shorter time.

Studio Reformer

The SR is currently the quietest reformer available on the market. It has an adjustable angle of the handrail in 4 vertical positions, as well as the ability to set the cart and springs at various distances from the handrail. You can adjust it to your height (adjustable by up to 30 cm). The SR frame is available in 3 heights – 36, 46, or 61 cm. It is made of maple wood, with a permanently built-in foot platform. Thanks to its special design, the movable platform can move along the longest currently available track – up to 104 cm! It has a three-position headrest supporting the neck and removable two-position armrests – making it easy to adjust for people with narrow and wide shoulders. The system of 5 precise springs has an adjustment of up to 46 levels of resistance. These are the longest available springs, allowing for the repetition of unchanged movements that require the same force.

Allegro 1 Reformer

Ease of use, safety, solidity, and durability – these are the main features of the Allegro 1 reformer. It has an adjustable angle of inclination, a wider than standard handrail in 4 vertical positions and also in 4 horizontal positions. As the only one, it allows for the adjustment and customization of the handrail to the height and body structure of the exercising person without changing its height. However, if necessary, the height of the frame can be increased from 17 to 36 cm by attaching legs. A novelty in this reformer is the use of a quiet and easy-to-adjust SoftTouch cable system, without metal clips, making working with the Allegro 1 much easier. It has a three-position headrest providing comfort and neck support, as well as adjustable and removable TwistLock armrests. Just like in the Studio Reformer, the Allegro 1 is equipped with a system of 5, the longest springs on the market. The Allegro 1 weighs only 51 kg and has built-in wheels, making it easy to move and set up. Its design allows for storage in a vertical position or stacking one on top of the other, saving space even in a small studio.

Allegro 2 Reformer

The Allegro 2 is a combination of anodized aluminum and elements made of maple wood. It has a standard height of 23 cm, but the use of legs allows for adjusting the frame height to 38 cm. The movable platform has a built-in headrest and two-position, easily removable armrests. It also features the longest 5 Signature Springs on the market, but a completely new feature is their even safer attachment on rings. The Allegro 2 allows for the adjustment and customization of the handrail to the height and body structure of the user without changing its height – all thanks to the adjustable angle of the handrail in 4 vertical and as many as 9 horizontal positions. The SoftTouch cable system without metal clips makes working with the reformer much easier. This solution allows for precise adjustment of the cable lengths to current needs – the length can be changed even while lying on the movable platform. Just like the Allegro 1, you can store it in a vertical position or stack them one on top of the other, which significantly affects space utilization.

Which Reformer to Choose?

Analyze all the differences in reformers. Consider who your main clients are. Are they individuals needing rehabilitation or rather training and muscle strengthening? Check how much space you have and whether you need a portable bed. Do you want to have group training or rather individual sessions? The differences in reformers cater to specific client needs. Not everyone who starts their journey with Pilates is an athlete or a dancer. Everyone has different physical and mental conditions, and with numerous modifications, you can tailor the equipment to the needs of your clients, not the other way around. If you want to cultivate the most faithful Contrology (classical Pilates) exercises, you will need a machine that reflects those constructed several decades ago.
