Benefits of Pilates During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a special time that should not limit physical activity – on the contrary! Movement is highly recommended, and in addition, it can help the future Mom return to shape more quickly after childbirth, as well as prepare her for the birth itself. How is this possible? The answer is simple – Pilates.

Pilates during pregnancy – what benefits does it bring?

It is worth considering Pilates classes during pregnancy – especially because exercises tailored for pregnant women are safe and relatively easy to perform. But that is just the beginning of the benefits of Pilates. For women expecting a child, the most important benefits of training are the proper preparation of the body for the effort associated with childbirth itself, as well as the reduction of discomfort related to gaining extra weight. This particularly refers to leg swelling and varicose veins, issues with urinary incontinence, as well as back and spine pain, especially in the lumbar region. Pilates helps maintain proper body posture, improves blood circulation in the limbs, strengthens the muscles of the entire body, and also increases the flexibility of the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles. In addition, regular exercise has a positive effect on improving well-being, eliminates depressive states, and also relaxes and improves breathing. As the baby gains weight and moves downwards, problems with constipation, urinary leakage during coughing or sneezing, and kidney issues may arise. Pilates effectively strengthens the pelvic floor, positively affecting the intestines, bladder, and uterus, and also ensures proper kidney function. Exercises towards the end of pregnancy will help ensure the baby is in the right position for natural childbirth.

Is Pilates during pregnancy safe?

Pilates during pregnancy is safe as long as it is properly supervised. What does this mean? In this unique condition, proper medical care is the most important – it is the gynecologist who should determine whether the future Mom can engage in such activities. In addition, it is important to conduct the classes appropriately – especially if one has not engaged in any form of activity, including Pilates, before pregnancy. Therefore, it is better not to risk exercising alone, but to choose a studio run by professionals. Some instructors are trained to work with pregnant women, which means they will be able to accurately assess capabilities and tailor specific exercises to them. Pilates is so extensive and versatile that without the proper knowledge – that is, trying to exercise alone at home – one can cause more harm than good. During pregnancy, participating in classes in small groups at a studio specializing in Pilates is the best option. The instructor will lead exercises in positions adapted to the stage of pregnancy, while also providing a variety of exercises that will be safe for the health of both Mom and Baby by selecting different equipment. In some locations, special classes designed specifically for pregnant women and those in the postpartum period are already being offered.
