Does Pilates Strain the Knees?

Some exercises – whether at the gym or practiced in groups – can put stress on the joints and knees. If you are concerned about such overloads or already have knee problems, you need to choose the safest form of physical activity for you. Does Pilates fall into this healthy category?

What should you know about your knees before you start exercising?

It is said that “sport is health.” Yes – but only if you train wisely and with the right knowledge. If you have problems with your knees and joints, you should be very careful in choosing forms of exercise. Of course, you don’t need to learn all of anatomy right away – a brief understanding and finding a wise trainer will suffice. So how does it work with these joints? If you are here, it means you are looking for a way to have healthy joints and a flexible and elastic body. In other words, you need to ensure the proper range of motion in your joints by choosing appropriate exercises. These, in turn, should positively affect not only the joints but also the muscles that protect them. They should shorten and increase their degree of contraction, and consequently strengthen the entire muscle corset responsible for maintaining an upright posture. Poorly chosen exercises can do more harm than good – this is particularly dangerous if you are unaware of the presence of any ailments and issues. For example, it could be joint hypermobility – which is above-average mobility in the joints, often perceived as an extraordinarily flexible and elastic body. Poorly chosen exercises, instead of leading to stabilization, can further exacerbate the condition, ultimately leading to greater health problems. Often, beginners starting their journey with various forms of exercise desperately want to keep up with the instructor or the group and force their bodies to exceed the range of motion in the joints – this is a quick path to injuries and more serious consequences.

Range of motion in the joints and Pilates

Once you understand how the basic movement of your knee joints works, it’s time to find the right exercises. Will Pilates be suitable for you? Well, Pilates pays special attention to the precision of movement, allowing the joints to move within a very functional range during exercises. You do not force the joints to exceed their range of motion, nor even to approach that limit. Although these exercises may not look like they are taken from our daily lives, they maintain all the ranges that are naturally assigned to our bodies. So the answer to the question: “Does Pilates put stress on the knees?” is – no! In Pilates classes, the vigilant eye of the teacher plays a significant role. Beginner practitioners of Pilates do not yet have full awareness and control over their bodies, which the instructor cannot fully monitor. However, they can observe the movement in the joints. This allows them to correct mistakes in real-time and ensure the safety of the exercises being performed. Here, you have a wonderful tip related to Pilates – especially if you are a beginner – you will benefit the most from exercises in professional Pilates studios, under the guidance of experienced teachers. Also, consider Pilates on machines. Working on machines can further improve the functioning of the joints – including the knees.
